Letter to the Editor

Sunday, October 2, 2022

Editor,

This letter is my response to the front page article in your daily edition for Sept. 29. It regards the dispute between two county commissioners and Judge Ruben Becerra.

I was curious regarding some matters in the article. I was wondering how anyone could get access to the tax liability status with IRS of any taxpayer. This is supposedly a private and confidential matter.

I made a telephone call to my CPA, whom I have used and respected for years. He advised me of the following:

1. It is not ordinary nor engaged in by any honest employee of IRS, nor the practice of that Federal Agency, to release any tax information about anyone.

2. Should there be a tax debt or lien on any personal property or failure to pay, IRS would make definite and regular efforts to collect such debt. They would send Agents on a regular basis to the home and business of the person with the debt. The Agency would make withdrawals regularly from the debtor’s personal and business checking accounts and possibly seize all money in the business account. The Agents would act after “failure to collect” efforts by shutting down the Becerra business GIL’S BROILER. That business is alive and healthy. I know because I bought a pack of Manske rolls there yesterday morning. My CPA advises that the visits by Agents from IRS would be public knowledge and be published in local news media. Such has yet to happen.

3. Becerra has already posted his tax returns. No taxes are unpaid. The claims by the “ugly” Commissioners calling into question the tax matters of the Judge are working on fabricated and untrue stories. They should find more realistic complaints against Judge Becerra during this time of pending elections and re-elections to put forth in efforts to defeat his re-election.

4. Personal tax matters of Judge Becerra have no bearing on his sitting in the elected seat nor his ability to serve as our county judge.

5. The Commissioners and the Hays County Republican Party are wise to bark up another (true and realistic) tree (matter) in efforts to oppose the reelection of Judge Ruben Becerra.

I am, Charles Campise, 55 year resident of Hays County, 42 year election worker in the county.
