The Mean Green Curse fights on for another year as Texas State fell to North Texas, 3-0, in front of a packed house Thursday.

Despite the shutout loss, Holeman said he was still proud of his team, indicating the score didn’t define what the Bobcats did on the field.

“It was a great game,” Holeman said. “North Texas is a great team. They capitalized on their chances. I certainly don’t think this was a 3-0 game, but rather a back and forth game. They just ended up scoring on the pen and getting some nice goals.”

North Texas moves to 10-0-1 against the Bobcats all time, as Texas State still searches for their first ever victory over the Mean Green.

“We had our chances,” Holeman said. “I know our shots looked a little lopsided. … Overall this is a game that helps us prepare for conference play. We just move forward.”

The first half was an evenly matched contest, as both teams countered each other’s attack.

The Bobcats almost scored a goal at the two-minute period but the ball sailed above the crossbar.

North Texas had their first opportunity to score in the 18th minute, but a save by goalie Katelyn Chrisman kept the game scoreless.

Both the Mean Grean and the Bobcats went back and forth during the first half, but neither team could break through the other’s defense, as the halftime remained scoreless.

“I thought we were solid,” Holeman said. “Our back four is much improved. We learned a lot from our preseason games. There is a reason we schedule tough teams and defend against North Texas. I thought we had a solid game. It’s just that the penalty kick was unfortunate. But that’s part of the game.”

North Texas took advantage of the penalty kick in the 61st minute of the second half, following a handball as Jenna Sheely got one past the goalie for the Mean Green’s first lead of the game.

“They stepped up and buried it,” Holeman said. “Credit to her [Sheely]. But what I liked about our team was our effort. Even down at the end, we were still creating chances and competing till the end.”

The Mean Green added another goal in the 67th minute, when Summer Brown belted a rocket to extend the lead to 2-0.

North Texas’ Devyn Bernsen tacked on the final goal of the game, scoring a goal from over 20 yards out, as the Bobcats fell 3-0.

Though the Bobcats had opportunities to score, the Mean Green were able to slam the door shut.

“Against teams like North Texas, you are not going to get 15 chances,” Holeman said. “You have to convert when you have the opportunity.”

Texas State will look to get back in the win column this Sunday for their first road game as the Bobcats travel to San Antonio to battle the UTSA Roadrunners.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Park West Athletic Complex in San Antonio. coltonbmcwilliams @sanmarcosrecord.com Twitter: @ColtonBMc
