David Hamilton to forego senior year at Texas, join Brewers

Former Rattler shortstop David Hamilton is now a former Longhorn, too.

Hamilton announced on social media Friday evening he intends to begin his professional career with the Milwaukee Brewers this week. The Brewers selected the San Marcos native in the eight round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft on June 4.

Hamilton spent three seasons with the University of Texas at Austin after playing four years with the Rattlers under head coach David Webb. He batted .256 for his collegiate career while racking up 57 RBIs in 125 games, was also named the Spike Owen Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2017 and became the orange an white’s leadoff hitter as a sophomore.

Though he didn’t know it at the time, his final game at Texas ended up being a 6-1 loss to Florida at the NCAA College World Series on June 19, 2018, in which he batted 1-4 with one walk. Hamilton tore his Achilles prior to the start of the 2019 season and had to sit out his junior year.

Hamilton is the first player of Webb’s to be drafted by an MLB team. The Brewers have three Rookie League teams they can place the shortstop on this summer.
