Hill Country Christian captures first district championship since 2015

The historic season for San Marcos Hill Country Christian continues as the Rams knocked off the Fredericksburg Heritage Eagles 72-66 to win the district championship.

The Rams captured their first district championship since 2015 while also marking the first time Hill Country Christian has been 7-0 in a season.

Heritage kicked off the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Eagles went up 6-0 following the failed PAT.

Hill Country Christian responded back as quarterback Jonas West found Josh Thompset in the endzone.

After a successful PAT kick, the Rams were up 8-6.

Heritage responded with a touchdown drive on their next possession as the Eagles retook the lead at 12-8.

Undeterred, the Rams were back in the end-zone as West scored on the rushing touchdown to put Hill Country Christian up 14-12.

The Eagles once again answered the Rams touchdown as Heritage scored on another rushing score and converted the PAT kick to go up 20-14.

Not backing down, the Rams answered back as West found Gary Daily in the end-zone as Hill Country Christian tied the game at 20-20.

Heritage was able to sneak in one last score before the first quarter ended as the Eagles now led again at 26-20.

Hill Country Christian opened up the scoring fest in the second quarter as West found the end-zone on the rushing touchdown to put the Rams back up 28-26..

Both defenses dug their heels for the majority of the second quarter before Heritage broke through on the passing touchdown to retake the lead at 34-28.

On the ensuing kickoff, West added points for the Rams scoring a 70-yard kickoff return as the Rams were back in front 36-34.

But Heritage got the final answer in the first half scoring on a hail mary as time expired to give the Eagles a 42-36 lead.

The start of the second half as the Rams jump back out in front once more as West found Thompset for the 25 yard touchdown pass as Hill Country Christian retook the lead at 43-42.

But the Rams caught Heritage lacking as Hill Country Christian kicked the onside kick, which was recovered by Caedmon Seale, to give the ball back to the offense.

Eight seconds later, Hill Country Christian scored again as West hit Gus Stephens on a 30 yard touchdown pass as the Rams led 49-42.

The Eagles answered back on the next drive with a passing touchdown and added two points on the PAT to put Heritage up 50-49.

Hill Country Christian responded once more as West hit Caedmon Seale for the passing touchdown to put the Rams up 5650 as both went into the fourth quarter.

Heritage opened up the final period of play with a rushing score as the Eagles jumped back in front 5856.

The Rams responded with a rushing touchdown of their own as West scored his third rushing touchdown of the game to put Hill Country Christian back on top 64-58.

Heritage seemingly put the game away as the Eagles scored on the rushing touchdown to go up 6664.

But the Eagles gave the Rams too much time on the clock as Hill Country Christian needed 2:27 to take back the lead.

Driving down to the Heritage 10-yard line, West capped off the win with a 10-yard rushing touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game as the Rams brought home the district championship with the 72-66 win.

West finished the game with 17 carries for 231 yards and four rushing touchdowns. West also passed for 197 yards going 7-13 with five passing touchdowns. West’s tenth touchdown came on the 70 yard kickoff return.

Seale and Thompset helped lead the defense with 11.5 tackles between the duo.

With the district championship in tow, the Rams will look to continue their perfect season as Hill Country Christian will go on the road San Antonio Castle Hills Friday night.
