It takes a “total team effort” to win.

That’s Lisa Mazur’s motto for her team. The head coach has been pleased with her San Marcos’ effort over the last two games. The Rattlers picked up their second district victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Converse Judson inside San Marcos Toyota Rattlers Stadium, 2-1.

“I thought we hung in there at the end,” Mazur said. “I said ‘It’s a win. A win’s a win.’ So, I’m proud of my boys and they played hard to the end. So good win. We’re 2-0 (in district), it’s been a while, so good win.”

The hosts got on the board early in the game. Senior Frankie Menchaca received a pass near the right sideline and dribbled up the field. He sent a low cross into the box and found sophomore Melvin Molina.

Molina was left 1-on-1 with Judson’s goalkeeper and made him pay. He sent a rolling shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the game with 28 minutes remaining in the first half.

“It’s just chemistry,” Menchaca said. “Like in practice, that’s all we do, is crosses and stuff like that. So, in the game, we put it together.”

The pair connected again in the second half. Menchaca lobbed in a long cross from the right side to the left goal post. Molina was there again, booting in another score to take a 2-0 lead with 23 minutes left in the game.

“We were just talking in the field and we looked at each other,” Molina said. “We have the chemistry … When they’re all looking at him, he knows where to place the ball. And he knows wherever he places the ball, I’m gonna go to it. And I’ma do whatever I can to score.”

San Marcos did give up a goal in the final two minutes of the game, but held on to the lead to earn the 2-1 victory. With the win, San Marcos improves to 4-5-2 on the season and 2-0 in 26-6A play.

“(We’re) just kind of playing together and playing hard from the beginning to the end,” Mazur said. “They’ve been connecting really well. They believe in each other, I guess. They see each other on the field real well.”

The Rattlers will return to the road on Friday to face Cibolo Steele (6-3-1, 1-1 district) at 7:15 p.m.

Lady Rattlers pick up first district victory at Judson

The Lady Rattlers also earned a district win on Tuesday in Converse, defeating the Lady Rockets, 8-3. The win is the team’s first of the district season. San Marcos (5-5-4, 1-1 26-6A) will play Cibolo Steele (5-2-3, 1-1) inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium at 7:15 p.m.
