The scoreboard wasn’t in her favor, but head coach Lisa Mazur was all smiles after the match.

San Marcos fell to New Braunfels Canyon inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Center on Friday night, 3-0. But Mazur could not have been prouder of her team.

“We were clicking,” Mazur said. “They just came together as one. This was a great, great teamwork, not-quitting effort.”

The Rattlers have done a solid job through the first cycle of their district schedule, going 3-4 during the road-heavy slate. It’s more district games than they’ve won in the past two years combined.

But Mazur is hoping for a playoff push as her team enters the second cycle. Playing more home matches will help. Playing together will help even more.

“It’s a tough district,” Mazur said. “There are very good teams. So, we’re going to have to stay on our A-game every time, every time … Hats off to Canyon, they have a great team. They were quick and they were good.”

Mazur said she’d like to see her players capitalize on more opportunities early in the half. Two of the Cougars’ three goals came during the first 10 minutes of each period. But she also wants to see more fight from the Rattlers.

That’s why the head coach was pleased after her loss. It was a step in the right direction against the top team in the district.

“We never quit,” Mazur said. “They never quit. So, it’s something to build on for us. We had three seniors on the team and we never quit. I think we bonded more tonight than we ever have.”

San Marcos (5-9-1, 3-4 26-6A) will stay home to host East Central on Tuesday inside the San Marcos Toyota Rattler Center at 7:15 p.m. Mazur is excited to see how her team responds.

“The goal’s always to win every single game,” Mazur said. “They’re still in until the last game, so we’re still going to fight and fight hard.”
