Sixteen Rattlers receive 26-6A All-District honors

Six players from San Marcos were awarded All-District Second Team honors in addition to 10 players who were honorable mentions from both sides of the ball.

On offense seniors, Alex Garcia (quarterback), Takai Madgett (wide receiver) and Ronnie Perez (tight end) were chosen to represent the Rattlers in one of the toughest districts in the state. 

Top 10 in the area in passing yards, Garcia racked up over 2,000 yards through the air in addition to his 14 touchdowns. The quarterback averaged 200.5 passing yards per game, on 13.5 yards per play and threw an 84-yard bomb — the longest of his career — in his last game as a Rattler.

Madgett, one of Garcia’s favorite targets, concluded his senior year career 65 catches, 950 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He led the team with five 100-plus receiving yardage games, including the last three games of his career, and collected 172 kick return yards, 21 punt return yards and 4 rushing yards, bringing his all-purpose total to 1,147 on the year. His talent has started to peak interest in some college coaches film rooms as Takai received his first official offer from Rose-Hulman Institute  of Technology. 

“It’s humbling because you work for something for a long time and it’s like calming to finally get the first one,” Madgett said.

With him seeing double coverage on the outside, tight end Ronnie Perez came up with huge chunks of yardage on third downs when the team needed it. Perez was injured in spring ball before the start of the season but made an immediate impact on the field when he returned, ending the year with 110 receiving yards and a touchdown in four games played on 10 yards per catch.

Defensively, junior linebacker Moses Alva and junior safety Kannon Webb were named to the Second Team as well. Alva was a backstop this season with 6.0 tackles per game — 18 of his 60 were solo tackles. Webb found his name on the honorable mention list last season. This season he made an All-District Team but he only intends to get better from here.

“It’s an honor to be Second Team,” Webb said. “My friend from (Cibolo) Steele, Wyatt (Begeal), made the team, too, so it’s cool to be around those guys. But I mean, it’s still First Team out there, there’s still defensive MVP, there’s still All-State, so there’s still more stuff to work on.”

Senior punter Alfredo Hernandez sits alone on the special team honorees. He finished with 31 punts for 983 yards and placed 4 within the 20-yard line.

Seniors Elijah Barrera (offensive lineman), Marshall Graham (offensive lineman), Matt Dixon (tight end), Diego Cruz (wide receiver), Aiden Cline (defensive lineman), Chris Soliz (defensive lineman), A.J. Gonzales (linebacker), Ryan Wilder (linebacker), Andres Alonzo (safety) and sophomore cornerback Malik Gordon were all named to the Honorable Mention list.

“It’s always good for kids to see themselves be recognized by other coaches and it’s really a testament to the core that we had with our kids,” assistant coach Mike Strunk said.

“Even though our win-loss record didn’t really say we were successful, other coaches were able to recognize how much work our kids put in and then highlight those achievements as All-District honorees.”
