'Snakebit' Rattlers look to find groove

San Marcos just isn’t clicking yet.

The Rattlers are ‘snakebit,’ head coach Bryan Webb said. After a 3-1 loss to Bastrop Cedar Creek on Tuesday, it’s evident San Marcos is still searching for its rhythm.

“We’re odd right now,” Webb said. “We’re just not clicking. We click for a little while and then we don’t click. A new problem is arising every time. We fix a problem and then some old problem arises and we can’t get past that right now. We’re just off. We haven’t found that niche. We haven’t found that groove. We’ve got about five games to find it before we start district play.”

The Rattlers (2-6) fell behind against the Eagles (4-2), 1-0, in the third inning. But they fought back to even the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning.

Cedar Creek regained the lead in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to go on top 3-1.

San Marcos kept its hopes alive by loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh. But the Rattlers couldn’t bring home a run and fell 3-1.

“You can’t wait until the last inning to do it,” Webb said. “Like I told them, ‘Don’t be sad because we left the bases loaded. We had great at-bats.’ I said, ‘It was the other six or seven things that happened that we allowed them to have three runs … They scored three runs and I don’t think they got the ball out of the infield.’ That’s what’s disturbing.”

But Webb is confident the Rattlers will eventually find their groove.

“Hits are contagious and eventually we’re going to get that hit and it’s going to take off,” Webb said. “But right now, we’re just cold at the plate. We’re snakebit. We’re learning but we’re going to have to pick it up.”

San Marcos travels to play in the SBC tournament in Freeport this weekend. The Rattlers will try to get on the right track as district play looms.

“We’re going to have to find some continuity,” Webb said. “We’re going to have to find some things that click. We’re starting to find it. We’re just having focus issues right now where we’re not having a good at-bat and we’re taking it to the defense side. We’re trying to be so fine tuned that we’re squeezing everything. It’s just not there yet. It’s coming.”
