Strom accepts head coaching position at Kent State
Lisa Strom bid farewell to Texas State on Monday, announcing she’s been named the new head coach at Kent State University.
Strom’s served as the head coach of the Bobcats for the past three seasons. She came to San Marcos after spending five years as an assistant at Ohio State.
During her first year at Texas State in the 2016-17 season, the team achieved the third-best scoring average in school history at 299.58. The next season, the Bobcats won their first team tournament title under Strom at the UTRGV Invitational, beating second-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by 21 strokes.
Strom saved her best campaign for last. The 2018-19 team broke program records in scoring average (296.7), rounds at or below par (five), and lowest team round (278, -10). Texas State finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Championship and sent senior Anne-Charlotte Mora to the NCAA Auburn Regional. Mora was named Sun Belt Player of the Year and received a first team All-Sun Belt selections. Junior Sasikarn Somboonsup and sophomore Geraldine Wong were also named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team.
In Kent State, the head coach takes over a program that finished first in the Mid Atlantic Conference Championship, first in the NCAA Lansing Regional and 17th at the NCAA tournament during the 2018-19 season. Strom announced the news in a post on social media.
“Eight and a half years ago, my college coach took a chance on me and I got into coaching to help players get better at golf,” Strom said in screenshot of the Notes app posted to Twitter. “Six years ago, I realized the massive responsibility we have as coaches to make an impact on those we get to lead. The trajectory of my life changed for the better after taking myself more seriously and digging into who I am.
“Three years ago, Texas State took a chance on a first-time head coach and for that, I am enterally (sic) grateful. These past three seasons have taught me about investing in relationships and remembering to always put first things first. The program has grown in so many ways and I’m excited for the Bobcats to continue on to new heights.
“Looking towards the next chapter of my career, I’m blessed to be named the head women’s golf coach at Kent State University. I’m excited to get to work and continue the climb towards a national championship. Go Flashes!”
