Texas State goes unselected in NCAA tournament

Texas State’s season officially came to an end on Monday, as the Bobcats were named as one of the first four teams out of the NCAA tournament.

The team arguably had its best regular season since 2011, compiling a 36-18 overall record. Texas State raced to the top of the Sun Belt standings with a 20-10 conference record to claim its first regular season title outright since joining the league.

However, the Bobcats fell short in the Sun Belt tournament after being upset twice as the No. 1 seed. The maroon and gold fell to No. 10-seeded Louisiana-Monroe on May 22, 8-0, then again to No. 5-seeded Coastal Carolina in an elimination game the next day, 13-4. The Chanticleers went on to defeat No. 2-seeded Georgia Southern in the championship game, 9-7, on May 26 to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.

Texas State still had a case for an at-large bid to the tournament, ranked 52nd in the nation and first in the Sun Belt by the ratings power index (RPI). But the NCAA selection committee passed over the Bobcats, along with Houston, Missouri and UCF, as one of the first four schools out. Duke, Florida State, Michigan and TCU were named as the last four in.

The team will lose 12 graduating seniors next season and return 25 underclassmen.
