Texas State sweeps Marshall with Powell walk off single

Texas State completed their sweep of Marshall with a thrilling 5-4 win over the Thundering Herd via a Davis Powell walkoff single in the ninth inning.

Following a single by left fielder Kameron Weil and a walk by center fielder Ben McClain, as well as both runners advancing to an extra base following a passed ball, Powell connected with a deep single into left center field to break the tie at 4-4 finishing an important sweep of the Thundering Herd.

“He started off with a slider,” Powell said. “He ended up throwing another slider that hung in so I tried my best to put it in play and score the run.”

Representing the game winning run, Weil knew the game was in hand with Powell up to bat.

“I knew he had it,” Weil said. “I have so much faith in him that he was going to hit it the other way and up in the air. He always gets the job done.”

The sweep was an important one for Head Coach Steven Trout as the Bobcats remain in what has turned out to be a very competitive race for the Sun Belt Regular Season Title.

“You have to find a way to win,” Trout said. “It is tough to sweep a team in this conference because they are all super talented and very competitive. As you saw today, Marshall had chances to win the game. Luckily, we found a way to get it done.”

Battling the 11 a.m. start time and the weather conditions, Trout was happy for his Bobcats battling into the victory.

“I’m really proud of the team with an early morning game,” Trout said. “Not being satisfied with two wins and getting after it. They did a really good job of finding a way to win.”

While the wind caused havoc with some of the batters, it was not a problem for Weil who reached base five times during the game including two hits, two walks, and one HBP.

“It was about staying patient at the plate and keeping the ball really low,” Weil said. “When I swung at the ball, I made sure I was on top of it.”

The wind not only was a bother for the batters but for the fielders as well.

The combination of both the sun and the wind made the challenges of catching a high fly ball harder than usually.

“With the wind and the sun, it made things difficult,” Weil said. “I missed a pop up right in the sun and with the wind the ball was snaking back and forth which made it tough. All you have to do is make sure you are staying underneath the ball and keep your head up.”

Trout also talked about the environment making things more difficult but was proud of the team for continuing to make plays on defense.

“It was a really tough day to catch pop-ups,” Trout said. “Not with the wind but also no clouds in the sky and the sun sitting right there which is a little bit lower than it usually is. It was tough on both sides and our guys kept battling to make enough plays to get it done.”

One of those plays came during the eighth inning as Marshall had a runner on first base with two outs.

Not only did the Bobcats get the second out on the following at-bat, via a McClain catch in center field, but Texas State was able to double off the runner at first who took off before tagging up.

This allowed McClain to throw the ball to first baseman Daylon Pena for the out.

Despite the ball being way over thrown, Pena made the catch before diving to tag the base before the runner for the important out.

Texas State returns to play tonight as they take on arch rival UTSA in the I-35 Rivalry.

It will be a highly anticipated rematch between the rivals as the now No. 25 Roadrunners took the first game of the series 112.

Both teams are coming off midweek wins over Power Five opponents and weekend sweeps of their conference opponents.

First pitch is at 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
