Black History Month

Though the pandemic and inclement weather has cut short many plans for celebrating Black History Month this year, San Marcos residents can still take a moment to commemorate the heritage and historical significance of Black San Marcans. The San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau has compiled a list of influential people and important landmarks that have shaped San Marcos over time.

The Garden Guy was looking at photos of last year’s trials, and I was struck by one of a Mecardonia. If you are like most, Mecardonia probably conjures up visions of one of the stops that Moses and the Israelites made while looking for the promised land. Hey, ‘The Garden Guy’ is joking.

Stay Warm

Slow cookers are a handy tool for any home chef, particularly those who juggle busy daily schedules. With slow cookers, meals can be prepared in advance and then left to simmer for hours while they develop deep flavors as meats become tender and succulent.

Sweet Night

Ricotta is included in this recipe for “Ricotta Cheesecake With Coffee and Chocolate” from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) by Nick Stellino, but it is not the only flavorful ingredient in this decadent dish. Photo from Metro Creative

Sweet Night

A cheesecake recipe can be useful on any special occasion, and especially so on Valentine’s Day. For many people, cheesecake is not cheesecake without the addition of ricotta cheese. While ricotta is included in savory dishes like lasagna or manicotti, it is at home in desserts like cheesecake as well.

Summerific Cranberry Crush is shorter than Holy Grail reach only 4 feet tall. The fiery scarlet blooms and deep green maple-like foliage create an exotic contrast.

2021: The year of the Hardy Hibiscus

The National Garden Bureau has declared 2021 The Year of the Hardy Hibiscus and The Garden Guy thinks this is absolutely terrific. Actually, I would go a-step further and say it is Summerific.
