My journey this week takes me to the San Marcos Regional Airport and an event that occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2020, involving the collision of two small airplanes and the rescue of an injured pilot.
The Krewe of Okeanos, producers of the annual San Marcos Mardi Gras Parade, donated three new musical instruments — two flutes and a trumpet — to the SMCISD Goodnight Middle School Band Program. The donation is part of the Krewe’s philanthropic mission to enhance Arts initiatives in the community through their Musical Instrument Program for local school children, and is funded through generous financial contributions by Okeanos Krewe members, in partnership with La Cima.
A few lucky folks still have hummingbirds in residence, mostly of the rufous variety, but for many of us, the hummers have departed. Thankfully, a new cast of winter birds will soon be arriving.

There is an excitement in the air about Christmas this year and it appears to be as contagious as... you know. Right now, it doesn’t seem to be about presents or shopping, though that will probably come. It seems to have a focus on tradition, on family, on a return to what is important. The beauty of the season seems to have achieved a status that has been unprecedented for a while. In 2020, decorating indoors has become the socalled ‘frosting on the cake.’
This weekend, a traveling photography display produced by The Martian Chronicles SMTX will hang in the Kissing Alley. The display features the culmination of the work of local documentarian, Christopher Paul Cardoza, in his attempt to document an entire town. Having covered the San Marcos social scene for almost a decade, Cardoza has lent his photographic talents to endeavors including collaborations with area businesses, different city entities, community groups, charitable organizations, and a vast array of local artists and musicians throughout his career. This project is a reflection of his life’s work. There is a story with every photo taken behind his lens.
