THE ECONOMIST: THe economy of school

This week marked the deadline for first-year college applicants to many universities to decide about whether and where to enroll. It can be a very difficult choice involving a range of financial, educational, and emotional factors. Through high school, options are much more limited for most young people. Beyond that point, however, a vast number of paths emerge – full-time work, technical training programs, colleges and universities, and much more. Let’s look at what recent high school and college graduates are doing.

Why First Republic failed. Are other banks to follow?

First Republic Bank has become the second large regional bank with assets over $200 billion to fail in just a few weeks. Like Silicon Valley Bank, which was seized by the government on March 10, First Republic catered to a wealthy clientele, which helped it grow deposits rapidly but may have also contributed to its undoing. The bank's business model left it susceptible to a sudden rise in interest rates.

Rattlers take on the Chargers in playoffs

Playoff baseball is upon us once more as the San Marcos Rattlers look to win their first playoff game since 2018 as they square off with the San Antonio Churchill Chargers It’s been an historic season for the Rattlers who bounced back from a 1817-1 record last season to a 22-9-1 record this year, which included winning the district championship for the first time since 2010.

SMHCC Senior signs NLI

This past Wednesday, Lizzy Fritzler, a senior at Hill Country Christian School, committed to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri, to be a member of their track and field team, throwing both shotput and discus. Lizzy will be studying pharmacology and plans to get her Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

When the kids are bouncing off the walls, it is time to help them get some energy out. But as the remnants of spring burn off into the heat of a Texas summer, there is only so much time you can spend pushing the swings at Children’s Park before it is time to get indoors.
