Is the Texas power grid at risk of winter blackouts? ERCOT, Abbott can’t decide
Is the Texas power grid at risk of winter blackouts? ERCOT, Abbott can’t decide
In the two years since Winter Storm Uri plunged millions of Texas homes into darkness, Gov. Greg Abbott has leaned on a familiar refrain: legislative fixes have made the state’s power grid healthier than ever. Abbott spent serious political capital ramming these changes through the Legislature in 2021, then practically staked his entire reelection bid on avoiding a Uri repeat. 12/27/2023 12:00 AM
Dear Abby
Man’s repeated absences now have an explanation
DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend of three years works six days a week with Sundays off. For the last six weeks, my calls have gone unanswered from Saturday evening through Monday morning. He’d provide a lame excuse, apologize for the “missed” calls, and the next weekend, the same thing would happen. Long story short, he was spending time in a drug house on the weekends. He ignored my calls because he didn’t want me to know what he was doing. He says it’s “no big deal,” he isn’t doing it anymore and we should move forward as if this never happened. 12/27/2023 12:00 AM

Legal groups sue to stop new immigration law
The ink was barely dry on a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott that makes unauthorized entry into the United States a state crime before a lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and El Paso County challenging its constitutionality. The Austin American- Statesman reported the suit was filed in an Austin federal court by the ACLU and two immigrant advocacy groups on behalf of the county. 12/26/2023 05:00 AM

That is what Lisa Arceneaux, an environmental engineer in San Marcos Texas thought about adding a rainwater collection cistern to a spot in her yard where no bushes would grow, and the rain off the house splattered mud on the walls. 12/24/2023 05:00 AM

Mexican cartels provide the drugs, we provide the weapons
Scanning the headline from our sister newspaper, we were tempted to ask, “What’s the problem?” After all, the alleged gun-smuggling miscreants reside in a state whose governor has chided his fellow Texans for not owning as many guns as their California counterparts. They live in a state where guns are ubiquitous; in stores, in shops, in restaurants, even at church, people are packing heat. (That gospel singer reminds us of a campaign ad then-Attorney General Greg Abbott ran a few years back, the one where he urged his fellow Texans to get more familiar with two things: guns and the Bible. He’s an Abbott two-fer, so to speak.) 12/20/2023 12:00 AM
Property tax cuts go into effect
Property tax cuts go into effect
A total of $18 billion in property tax cuts were approved by more than 80% of voters in the November general election and should be reflected in property tax bills that are due by Jan. 31. The cuts come in the form of increased home exemptions, lower school district rates, and limiting the amount property appraisals can rise. 12/19/2023 12:00 AM

Here’s a regrettable trend: as profanity has become commonplace, swear words are losing their usefulness. 12/17/2023 05:00 AM
