2021 Year of the Hardy Hibiscus was a sensational hit
The Garden Guy would like to officially declare 2022 ‘Encore Year of the Hardy Hibiscus.’ I don’t know how the National Garden Bureau judges the success of any particular year’s celebration, but I am feeling Summerific French Vanilla helped Old Norm hit it out of the park in 2021.

‘Hadestown’ to open in Austin Jan. 11
How can a story so hopeless as the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice possibly deliver a message of hope? For those unfamiliar with the story, it goes something like this: Orpheus and Eurydice are in love, yet on their wedding day, Eurydice is fatally bitten by a snake. Distraught, Orpheus goes into the Underworld to plead with Hades and Persephone to see his bride released back to the living world.

Exploring Nature: Lark Sparrow
On a mild winter day, I recently visited the Patsy Glenn Refuge in Wimberley and sat for a while in the large bird blind at the back of this two-acre property.

The Journey Continues: Going into the New Year, Part 2
I remind myself that the purpose of my column is about people and their relationship with Jesus Christ. With the impact the COVID-19 has had on our world, we now spend less time outside the home. It follows we have more time for reflection, Bible study, and prayer. We can meditate on how we can live in “peace within” no matter what challenges we face. The world is calling Believers to be genuine as we “practice what we preach.”

Suñorita Rose Garners American Rose Society’s ‘Award of Excellence’
The Garden Guy wasn’t stopping to smell the roses but instead stared in awe at the form of a rosebud. Even though this new rose variety called Suñorita is considered a miniflora, the bud looked like a classic tiny hybrid tea. Then — out of nowhere as if to confirm my admiration — a butterfly landed on top and proceeded to investigate.
