The Rotary Club of San Marcos awarded $35,000 in scholarships, ranging from $1,500 to $2,000, to 17 San Marcos High School seniors on April 24. Students at Travis Elementary School raised $850 for a scholarship for a SMHS senior who had earlier attended Travis, with Rotary matching their gift. Tanger Outlets San Marcos continued its commitment to making the center and the planet a little greener with a tree-planting initiative in honor of Earth Day. This event was a part of a nationwide Tanger Outlets program to make a difference, one tree at a time. As a step in helping purify the atmosphere’s air and create fresh oxygen sources, every U.S. Tanger center planted a tree, and all team members were encouraged to participate in environmentally focused efforts and volunteerism in their communities to celebrate Earth Day. The pandemic has further compounded the impact on mental health. Admissions to ERs have increased by 24%; the rate of suicides has increased; fatal overdoses have increased. Seventy-six percent of workers have indicated they are struggling with mental health challenges, up from 59% in 2019.* Left unaddressed, the negative impact will increase.
