Scanning the headline from our sister newspaper, we were tempted to ask, “What’s the problem?” After all, the alleged gun-smuggling miscreants reside in a state whose governor has chided his fellow Texans for not owning as many guns as their California counterparts. They live in a state where guns are ubiquitous; in stores, in shops, in restaurants, even at church, people are packing heat. (That gospel singer reminds us of a campaign ad then-Attorney General Greg Abbott ran a few years back, the one where he urged his fellow Texans to get more familiar with two things: guns and the Bible. He’s an Abbott two-fer, so to speak.)

Commissioners to receive update on Pet Resource Center
The Hays County Commissioners Court will hear a presentation by the Homeless Coalition of Hays County regarding the status of homelessness in the county, a presentation by Austin Pets Alive! about the results of the Community Needs and Values Survey and could authorize an increase to the renewal agreement with Wellpath, LLC., which provides health services for county adult and juvenile detention. The regularly scheduled meeting begins at 9 a.m.

Council will consider further postponement of Comp Plan
The San Marcos City Council is set to consider further postponement of the Vision SMTX Comprehensive Plan in order to give more time for public input, could consider a reallocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds and additional funds to the contract for ARPA fund consulting firm and could consider several large purchases and contract increases. The regularly scheduled meeting is set for 6 p.m.

Nearly 1.7 million Texans lose Medicaid as state nears end of 'unwinding'
Nearly 1.7 million Texans have lost their health insurance — the largest number of people any state has removed — in the months since Texas began peeling people from Medicaid as part of the post-pandemic “unwinding.” Around 65% of these removals occurred because of procedural reasons, according to the state.

The Prince Solms Chapter for The Sons of the Republic of Texas held its December meeting at Granzin’s Restaurant in New Braunfels, Texas on 16 December 2023. Installation of new officers for the calendar year 2024 was conducted.

Hays County holds inaugural Mental Health Court commencement
The Hays County Mental Health Court hosted the first commencement in celebration of those graduating from the Court program. Those in attendance included the family and friends of the program participants.

Property tax cuts go into effect
A total of $18 billion in property tax cuts were approved by more than 80% of voters in the November general election and should be reflected in property tax bills that are due by Jan. 31. The cuts come in the form of increased home exemptions, lower school district rates, and limiting the amount property appraisals can rise.
