Art Squared on the courthouse lawn

Friday, August 10, 2018

The Art Squared Arts Market will be the hottest place in town this Saturday. Sponsored by the San Marcos Art League, the market features local and regional artists exhibiting and selling their handmade works. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Hays County Courthouse lawn. Admission is always free.

Along with seeing dozens of artists and their works, including this month’s featured artist Kathryn Welch, people can take a free yoga class in the morning and enjoy live music by JusTif from 1 to 3 p.m.

Art Squared takes place on the second Saturday of every month between March and December. It is sponsored by the San Marcos Art League and funded through memberships, donations and the San Marcos Arts Commission.

Featured Artist

Kathryn Welch, owner of River City Glassworks in San Marcos, has been designing and creating stained glass artwork for over a decade. Specializing in custom residential and commercial installations, she also repairs and restores stained glass and teaches classes on all levels. When she is not creating custom work for clients, Welch creates one-of-a-kind windows and mosaic sculptures for art markets.

Justin and Tiffani are the Austin acoustic duo known as JusTif. With one guitar, two vocals and a whole slew of shakers, they've made their musical presence known throughout Central Texas. They entertain with the feeling of a full band, while pulling you in with heartfelt harmonies and lyrical truths which will linger long after the show is over.

Featured Community Organization

The Mermaid Society of Texas has been vital in promoting San Marcos as a creative and vibrant community. Celebrating our town’s arts, culture and heritage, and fostering river guardianship, the Mermaid Society’s mission is to be a catalyst for creative collaboration, promotion civic engagement, and inspiring connection for the overall good and future well-being of San Marcos. Be sure to participate in the 2018 Mermaid SPLASH, which takes place at multiple sites throughout the city, Sept. 8-22.

Yoga Class

A free one-hour yoga class starts at 9 a.m. on the courthouse lawn, led by Nicole Marie and Betsy Robertson, both certified yoga instructors. People with all levels of yoga experience are welcome. The class consists of a gentle yoga appropriate for beginners, but also offers options for those who want more challenge.
