San Marcos business wins Innovator of the Year

One of the businesses housed at Texas State University's STAR park has earned a prestigious award.

Quantum Materials Corp. (QMC) has been named the 2018 “Innovator of the Year” by YTEXAS, an organization that works to accelerate executive connectivity and corporate presence for companies recently relocated to Texas.

QMC develops and manufactures quantum dots and nanomaterials for use in display, solar energy and lightning applications through its proprietary “high-volume, continuous-flow” production process. The company's methods enable consistent quality and cost reductions in providing the foundation for technologically superior, energy-efficient and environmentally-sound displays said to be the “next generation” of solid-state lighting and solar photovoltaic power applications.

The company is one of five incubated in Star One, the university says. 

Specifically QMC was presented with a Relo Award by YTEXAS' on Sept. 28. This is the fourth year the awards have been given.

Relo Awards honor the “featured 50,” described as “the most notable corporate locations from the previous five years that embody the three tenets of the YTEXAS mission: community, commerce and culture,” YTEXAS CEO Ed Curtis said. “We are pleased to honor Quantum Materials Corporation as our 2018 Innovator of the Year in recognition of the potential that their development of advanced nanomaterials and quantum dots offer for changing the way the world produces clean solar energy, more efficient lighting and targeted drug delivery."

QMC President and CEO Stephen B. Squires also weighed in. “We are very pleased to receive this recognition from YTEXAS and appreciate all the support we have received from the state of Texas and in particular Texas State University since we relocated from Tempe, Arizona,” he said.

“We found Texas to be an excellent business environment and a rich talent pool for the specialized skills critical to our research and development. We are very pleased to have become a Texas company and look forward to growing and succeeding here over the coming years.”

YTEXAS, headquartered in Austin, has received national acclaim for being at the forefront of economic development trends in publications including the Fox Business Channel, CNN Money and several editions of the Texas Business Journal.

In addition to Relo Awards, YTEXAS annually honors companies perceived as Gamechangers and Texas All-in. Regarding the latter, one CEO his selected as Ambassador of the Year for his/her commitment to assisting companies both professionally and personally in their transition to Texas. The awards and Featured 50 companies are selected by a panel of seasoned Texas CEOs. 

STAR One, which opened in 2013, is a 58-acre site with a 36,000 square foot facility dedicated to the university's research and commercialization efforts. Serving start-ups and early-stage businesses, it provides its tenants access to secure wet labs, clean space, conference rooms and office space.
