Exploring Nature: Bird Poetry Contest

Sunday, May 7, 2023

It’s back again by popular demand. The bird poetry contest is here once more.

In years past, we’ve had loads of entries, mostly from folks in this area, but one from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Here’s all you need to know: The contest is for poems about birds and the prize is $100 and seeing your winning poem in my column. The poem must not be overly long and it must rhyme. No blank verse, please.

Deadline for entries to arrive is Saturday, May 13. Send your poem by postal mail to Jerry Hall, 750 Cypress Creek Lane, Wimberley, Texas 78676. Be sure to include your telephone number so I can call you if you are the winner.

And finally, here is a short poem to give you an idea of what I’m looking for:

Hummingbirds

I love hummingbirds, they’re neat little birds, Hard to describe in just a few words. They fly sideways and upside down, Act like a little clown. I enjoy their antics all summer long, And will be sad this fall when they are gone.

Okay, the contest is officially open. Don’t delay, get your poem in today.
