Exploring Nature: Contest Winner

Sunday, February 27, 2022

We have a winner! Suzanne H. Leighton, of San Marcos, has submitted the winning poem in my poetry contest. As you may recall, the only requisites were the poem should be reasonably short, about birds and/or nature and should rhyme. I had a hard time choosing a winner from all the excellent submissions.

Without further ado, here is Suzanne’s winning poem:

I saw a flock of daffodils

Flutter up their leaves,

And strain to join the sparrows

Nesting in the eaves.

With no regard for bulb or stem,

They tossed their sunny heads,

And sought a different freedom Than that of flowerbeds.

Than that of flowerbeds.

I have sent Suzanne a $50 bill and hope she enjoys seeing her work in this newspaper.

Suzanne noted that her favorite bird is the cardinal and said she tried to write a poem about that bird, but “it just wouldn’t come.” What did come was our prizewinner, and I really like it.

By the way, in addition to entries from Texas, I had an excellent poem submitted by Susan McClellan from Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. The Daily Record really gets around. My sincere thanks to all of

My sincere thanks to all of — to put it in poetry:

Your poems were great,

Now I’ll celebrate.

I’ll drink a toast,

While I do boast.

You folks are fine poets

And now we all know it!
