Exploring Nature: Travel Tips

Sunday, November 14, 2021

Let me offer a bit of advice. Don’t wait too long to make trips to faraway places. True, you have to wait until you can afford the journey, but don’t put off traveling in the belief you can always go at a later date. That later date may never come – people die at all ages and there’s no guarantee you won’t be an early fatality.

If you do decide to travel, I would like to offer five excellent destinations you might consider.

First, get thee to Africa; take a wildlife safari and schedule a stop at Victoria Falls in the country of Botswana. You can hear the rumble of the falls before coming on the scene, and standing on the viewing platform, you’ll get wet from the mist and spray. What a magnificent sight. You can see why Eleanor Roosevelt, on seeing these falls, remarked, “Poor Niagara.” This is one monstrous, glorious waterfall.

Second bucket-list sight would be the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. Go on a boat tour and take a dive off the boat to look down in the 400- foot deep, crystal-clear water. Coral reefs come in all shapes and colors and this is truly a visual treat.

Third, visit Africa’s Okavanga Delta and let a native guide show you around in a small canoe. We came upon a hippopotamus and the guide informed us this placid-looking animal was the most dangerous killer in Africa. “He will bite you into two pieces,” he told us.

Fourth, take a trip to South America and visit the ancient ruins of Macchu Picchu, an Inca city abandoned some 400 years ago and a wonder of engineering and construction.

Buildings and walls were fashioned without mortar, yet these stones fit so tightly together that not even a knife blade could fit between them.

In order to get up to the ruins, we traveled for miles alongside a river with moist appealing name – the Urubamba. I love to hear that name, it speaks of mystery, intrigue and excitement.

Finally, take a trip to the Galapagos an visit some of the islands, including Sant Cruz, site of the Charles Darwin Resear Station. You’ll see giant tortoises, bluefooted boobies and marine iguanas.

Today is a great time to start planning your faraway trip; a wonderful world is waiting out there.

What are you waiting on?
