SMUUF donates $660 to Centro Cultural
During a recent Sunday morning Worship Service, the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) took up a collection of $660 to donate to Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos.
Once a month SMUUF donates to a local nonprofit who is working in an area that aligns with SMUUF’s values.
"Centro addresses SMUUF’s social justice mission in the area of historically marginalized groups,” SMUUF Social Justice Chair Jeannie Lewis said.
Centro is the cultural center of the Mexican-American community in San Marcos. The history of experiences shared in Centro as the former school building – known as the “Mexican School,” the Southside School, Bonham Elementary and Bonham Pre-K – bring together the community in a place of learning from then and now.
"The mission of Centro is to serve as a community beacon for the preservation, development, promotion and celebration of the Hispanic arts, culture and heritage," Centro’s Program Coordinator Gloria Salazar said.
Centro is a social-educational enterprise that works to document the past, respond to the present and build towards the future. The work of Centro is centered on a community-development framework and is dedicated to serving the people.
"SMUUF is pleased to have partnered with Centro for several years now," Lewis said. "These funds will be used to help support Centro's summer programs for children."
