LBJ Museum Spring Lecture to focus on life of George H.W. Bush

Sunday, March 3, 2019

“A Legacy of Service” of the late President George H.W. Bush will be the subject of the annual Spring Lecture at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend the free event.

Warren Finch, director of the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University in College Station, will talk about the 41st president’s contributions.

President Bush died at the age of 94 on Nov. 30, 2018, the longest lived president in U.S. history. He was buried next to his wife Barbara and daughter Robin near his presidential library in College Station. Texas A&M also houses the Bush School of Government and Public Service, a graduate public policy program.

Finch will speak at 7 p.m.

A Navy veteran of World War II, President Bush was elected President in 1989 after serving eight years as Vice President under President Ronald Reagan.

During his four year term, the West prevailed in the Cold War, with the Soviet Union giving way to a democratic Russia. The Berlin Wall came down and Germany was unified with NATO. President Bush also signed two treaties to reduce the threat of nuclear war and presided over a successful war with Iraq over its invasion of Kuwait.

His domestic achievements included passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico, and the Clean Air Act. Bush also served as a congressman, ambassador, chairman of the Republican National Committee, and director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
