New council members to be sworn in Wednesday

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

The most diverse city council in San Marcos history will be complete Wednesday night after Jocabed “Joca” Marquez and Mark Rockeymoore, winners of the Dec. 11 runoff election, take the oath of office.

At a special meeting, council will canvass the results of the runoff election, and Marquez and Rockeymoore will be sworn in. But before that, council has some other business to attend to.

Council will hold the second of two public hearings to receive comments for or against the annexation of about 934 acres at State Highway 80 and Farm to Market Road 1984. City officials have said the land is entirely within the San Marcos extraterritorial jurisdiction. The acreage will be home to the Katerra Development, a large manufacturing facility being built under economic incentive agreements with San Marcos and Caldwell County, and a hub involving trucks, rail and eventually air for the transportation of freight. Council will take no action tonight; the first reading of the ordinance authorizing annexation will be held Jan. 15, and the second and final reading is scheduled for Jan. 29.

Council will also consider a resolution supporting the submission of an application for low income housing tax credits for the VIllas Del San Xavier Senior Community development, to be located at 2621 S. Interstate Highway 35. The council had approved a similar resolution in October, but because the project will be seeking tax-exempt bonds, the resolution needs to be in a different form.

Tonight’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins St. City council meetings are also televised live on Spectrum Ch. 10 and Grande Ch. 16 or 123-16 and streamed online.
