Registration open for Mathworks’ Junior Summer Math Camp

Sunday, February 24, 2019

The Mathworks program at Texas State University is accepting applications for its half-day Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC).

The half-day program is a multi-level two-week camp that encourages students of all mathematical abilities to experience fun and engaging math activities. At the half-day camp, students explore math problems together and share in mathematical exploration and discovery. Students in younger grade levels are introduced to algebra concepts through play-acting and the more advanced grades engage in problem-solving and discrete math. They work both individually and in groups and learn not only how to solve a problem, but also why things work.

The half-day camp runs 8 a.m. to noon June 10-21 at San Marcos High School. The camp is open to students in grades 3-8. The non-residential day camp offers breakfast, lunch and a snack. Bus service is available for San Marcos CISD students.

Tuition is $400, but scholarships are available through recent grants to the program:

  • The Summer STEM Collaborative, which has donated $44,000
  • The H-E-B Tournament of Champions, which has provided $16,000 for scholarships, marking their 8th year of support for the JSMCH
  • The Sarah Yager Scholarship Fund, which donated $4,800, marking their 4th year of support for the JSMCH
  • The San Marcos Lions Club, which has donated $1,600, marking their 7th year of support for the JSMCH.

The donations provide scholarships for students with financial need, helping to ensure that all students can attend the JSMC regardless of their financial background. Mathworks also received a grant of $13,000 from the American Mathematical Society Epsilon Fund to support the Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp, a sixweek, multi-year residential program for talented high school students.

JSMC applications may be completed online.

The official application deadline is May 15, but students are encouraged to apply much earlier. For more information, contact Mathworks at 512-245-3439 or at mathworks@txstate.edu.
