Terri Hendrix at Summer in the Park tonight

Thursday, July 26, 2018

Terri Hendrix will take the San Marcos Plaza Park stage tonight for her seventh time performing at the Summer in the Park concert series.

Hendrix has pioneered an independent path as a Texas singer and songwriter, and her music doesn’t ring the bell of one genre, but many. She is a classically-trained vocalist and accomplished multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, mandolin and harmonica. Her music is a little bit country, swells with soul, is touched by a bit of jazz and blues.

Hendrix has been a notable singer and songwriter for three decades in Central Texas and her work in the community to bring life to her nonprofit creative arts center OYOU — an acronym for “Own Your Own Universe” — has made the creative arts accessible to people of all abilities.

“I feel proud of all the music I’ve done to date, but my job is to keep reaching for a new level of artistic integrity — and to do all I can to not only make a positive difference while I’m here on this earth, but to build something that will hopefully continue to make a difference long after I’m gone,” Hendrix said about her work.

Hendrix has an engaging energy on stage, a realness of character and song. Her melodic flair has endeared her to three generations of loyal fans in Central Texas and has garnered her a reputation. She was recognized by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as one of Texas’ 20 essential contemporary singer-songwriters, has a star on the South Texas Music Walk of Fame, won the Art of Peace Award by Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio and is a 2015 inductee into the Women’s Hall of Fame in San Marcos.

Hendrix is also a prolific songwriter, having averaged nearly an album a year going all the way back to her 1996 debut, “Two Dollar Shoes.”

Now well into her third decade as a performing artist, Hendrix is currently in the midst of creating her masterpiece-work that is a five-part undertaking she calls “Project 5,” which by the time she finishes it will comprise four thematically-linked albums and a autobiography that touches on Hendrix’s lifelong battle with epilepsy and the path she’s carved to wellness.

Hendrix will be backed by her band of 20 years that consists of nationally-recognized country music record producer, musician and songwriter Lloyd Maines on dobro and guitar. Maines was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame as one of the first three members, the other two being Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. She will also have Glenn Fukunaga on bass guitar and John Silva on drums.

Terri Hendrix will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. and play until 9:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Plaza Park. The show goes on rain or shine, though if it rains the show will move to the San Marcos Activity Center.
