Trustees facing a full President’s Day agenda

Instead of a day off for Presidents Day, the SMCISD board of trustees is getting a full agenda including accountability reports, election dates and a potential decision on a new central office building.

At its Monday meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m., the board will receive the district’s annual Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR). The Texas Education Agency has posted 2017-2018 TAPRs for all of the state’s districts and campuses. SMCISD received a “C” overall. All of the district’s campuses achieved the state’s “Met Standard” rating, with several campuses receiving distinction designations.

Monday’s meeting also includes an action item on the construction of a central office facility. The board has looked at several options for a new central administration facility since the old building on South LBJ Drive was vacated due to mold and other air quality issues. The district has been leasing space on Mill Street for $12,000 a month. An effort to renovate part of the Mendez campus to accommodate a central office facility there was found to be too expensive for the district’s budget of $4.5 million. Currently, the administration is recommending the construction of a new central office on property the district owns at the corner of Hunter Road and Suttles.

In other business, the board will hold a discussion and possibly take action to petition the State Legislature to change the election code so that the district can change its general election date from May to November.

The board is also set to consider naming the San Marcos High School cafeteria after Tomas Cuevas.

Monday’s meeting will be held in the Criminal Justice Classroom at San Marcos High School, 2601 Rattler Road. The meeting will also be streamed online on the district’s YouTube channel.
