Weigh in on transporation plan tonight

Planning & Zoning

The public will have a chance to speak out on the San Marcos Transportation Master Plan at tonight’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

The meeting will include a presentation from staff and a public hearing on the plan, which encompasses the city’s Thoroughfare Plan, Bike Infrastructure Plan and Greenways Plan. It is an update of the city’s 2004 Transportation Master Plan and takes into account socioeconomic data and information from the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

“The improvements identified in this plan will help to enhance transportation safety, minimize congestion, preserve local character, and protect the rivers and the San Marcos environment,” the agenda item reads.

The goals of the Transportation Master Plan are to preserve character while encouraging economic development, expand bike lanes and trails, build a safe and efficient multimodal system, create a connected and safe pedestrian network, expand greenways and plan for transit to serve the downtown area and intensity zones throughout the city.

Funding is not available to implement all the parts of the plan immediately, according to city staff, but prioritization criteria have identified the most important projects.

After the public hearing and presentation, P&Z will make a recommendation regarding the master plan.

In other business, the commission will approve three platting requests related to TRACE, including a subdivision improvement agreement and final plat for approximately 11.95 acres which will serve as the legal lot for San Marcos CISD’s Rodriguez Elementary School.

P&Z also will hold public hearings and consider requests for the renewals of conditional use permits allowing mixed beverage sales at the Courtyard by Marriott and The Rooftop on the Square. The commission will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins St. The meeting will also be live streamed online and broadcast live on Time Warner Ch. 10 and Grande Ch. 16 or 123-16.
