Election results show all four bond issues passing

The unofficial, preliminary votes for Saturday’s uniform election are in and San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District officials are celebrating a clean sweep in the passage of its four bond propositions.

Statistics were released by the Hays County Elections Division on Saturday, May 6, and it is important to note that the following data represents the total number of voters for all of the county, not just information regarding the school board of trustees election and the bond propositions. According to the elections division, there were 7,329 in-person voters that participated in early voting and 4,565 in-person voters on election day. There were 278 regular mail voters and one federal post card application. The subtotal for in-person voters was 11,894 and subtotal for absentee voters was 279. There were 337 mail ballots sent and 118 returned ballots.

Up for election for SMCISD Board of Trustees for District 1, were Philip Muzzy and Jessica Cain. Cain received the majority of the preliminary votes cast with 245. Muzzy received 167 votes in both early and election day results. The total percentages for both Cain and Muzzy was 59.47% and 40.53%, respectively.

For District 1 Absentee voting, the preliminary votes were split at 50% for both of these candidates. Early voting was 144 votes, or 62.88% for Cain and 85 for Muzzy, or 37.12%. Election day voting was 91 for Cain with 55.83% of the tally, and 72 votes or 44.17% for Muzzy.

Up for the board of trustees for District 2, were Margie T. Villalpando and Kevin Carswell, with Villalpando receiving the majority of the preliminary votes cast, 93 and for Carswell, 32.

For District 2 absentee voting, with three votes cast, there were two votes or 66.67% for Carswell and one vote cast or 33.33% for Villalpando.

For early voting, Villalpando received 46 votes or 71.88%, and there were 18 votes or 28.13% for Carswell. For election day voting, Villalpando received 46 votes and a percentage of 79.31% and Carswell received 12 votes or 20.69%.

The total preliminary percentages for Villalpando were 74.40% with 93 votes cast and and 25.60% for Carswell with 32 votes cast.

Each of the propositions for SMCISD on the ballot were passed but for proposition D regarding the Natatorium, the vote was close.

The ballot featured SMCISD Prop A which authorizes the school district to purchase attendance credit from the state with local tax revenues, with the preliminary coming out to 1,855 votes for and 530 against. Prop B which is a $147,724,645 school building bond for construction, renovation, acquisition and equipment of school buildings in the district paid for by a property tax increase, passed with 1,558 preliminary votes for and 842 against.

Prop C which is a $984,563 school bond for construction, renovation and equipment for the San Marcos High School stadium paid for by a property tax increase, which passed with 1,228 preliminary votes for and 1,164 against.

Prop D which is a $17,478,750 school bond for the construction, renovation and equipment for a Natatorium (indoor swimming pool) paid for by a property tax increase, passed with 1,232 preliminary votes for and 1,158 against.

The SMCISD Board of Trustees will not go back to the table to address a schedule for bringing the props into being.
