Hays County Food Bank modifies food distribution

The Hays County Food Bank has modified its distribution until at least May 1, the food bank announced Friday.

The county food bank is changing its distributions due to limited resources, including staff, volunteers, food and gathering limitations. The food bank will re-evaluate the situation following May. 1.

The Hays County Food bank will make all distributions through drive-thru. Volunteers and staff will provide pre-packed bags of food. Volunteers and staff will be practicing social distancing and will wear gloves during distributions.

The food bank will hold the distributions at the following locations and times:

  • Tuesdays — St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 801 N. Burleson, Kyle at 12 p.m.
  • Wednesdays — San Mar cos Recreation Center, 170 Charles Austin Dr., San Marcos at 6 p.m.
  • Thursdays — Connection Church, 1235 S. Loop 4, Buda at 12 p.m.

The food bank states that the distributions are intended “for households most in need, and only qualifying households will be able to pick up grocery items.”

According to the Hays County Food Bank, in order to qualify for food assistance, households must meet one of the following:

  • Have a household income at or below the 185% of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • Participate in one of the following government assistance programs:
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • National School Lunch Program (free or reduced school meals)
  • Medicaid
  • Have a temporary food emergency such as a loss of job, loss of sole provider, etc.

The Central Texas Food Bank and Hays County Food Bank will host a mobile pantry on Tuesday, April 7 at 8:30 a.m. at San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium.

The food bank currently needs financial donations, reusable grocery totes, clean paper/plastic bags, hand sanitizer, hand soap, gloves, canned meat — tuna, chicken and salmon, canned fruits, canned mixed veggies, canned soups and canned tomato products.

The Hays County Food Bank is currently closed to the public but donations can still be made. Those wanting to donate are asked to call 512-393-8300 extension 230 to schedule a donation. Those with questions can call the number above.
