Weather causes local Easter Egg Hunts to reschedule

Perhaps it was a needed lesson. After all, Easter isn't really about picking up plastic eggs. Nonetheless, those plastic eggs have become an opportunity for community – to engage with our neighbors as well as our own families. While some planned Easter celebrations were able to continue, two of the largest events in San Marcos were postponed and rescheduled due to the spring rains.

The second annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Heritage Association of San Marcos will be held on April 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veramendi Plaza Park.

“Veramendi Plaza Park was holding water after the rains last week,” Brian Olson, who has helped organize the event, said. “Basically, it would have been a mud pie making event if we had held it on Saturday. It might have been fun, but it would have really messed up the park.”

There are 450 children registered for the Easter Egg Hunt, and with the event rescheduled registration is still open on heritagesanmarcos. org.

The event will have an Easter Egg Hunt which also has 24 hidden raffle tickets hidden inside the eggs that can be turned in for packages of toys donated by event sponsors ranging from bicycles to baseball bats, water guns, a canoe and plenty more. There will also be music playing throughout the park, the Easter Bunny on hand, arts and crafts tables and the Dr. Eli T. Merriman Cabin, which is a one-pen, hand-hewn log cabin home built in 1846 as the second home in San Marcos, will be open for tours.

'The Heritage Association has taken care of Veramendi Plaza Park for decades contributing to the park's beautification and upkeep of the structures within the park,' Olson said. 'The money raised through this event will help continue that tradition and continue preservation efforts within our community' Additionally, the third annual Hays County Easter Egg Hunt, which is held on the grounds of the Historic Hays County Courthouse, was rescheduled for April 29 at 10 a.m. The event is now being held in conjunction with Community Action’s Dia del Nino event, which was previously scheduled for this day.

There will be four different egg hunts, separated by age, that begin at noon. Hays County Commissioners donated a prize Easter basket for one child in each age group who finds a golden ticket inside an egg. There will also be refreshments, crafts and games hosted by the LBJ Museum, Dunbar Heritage Association, KnD Boutique, Mermaid Society, League of Women Voters, Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community, Downtown Association, and H-E-B. Also on hand for children will be “Storytime Princesses” from the Texas State Medical Explorer Omega Leo Program.
