Juneteenth events begin Thursday

San Marcos will celebrate Juneteenth 2019 with special events from June 13-15 and throughout the whole month.

The Garland Warren, Nelvia L. Burleson and Charles Callihan Memorial Cake Auction, which Rose Brooks organizes to raise money for scholarships, will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the San Marcos Activity Center. Scholarship recipients in the past have graduated from schools such as Texas State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Xavier University, Howard University, Notre Dame, Rutgers and others. Many received their master’s and doctorate degrees, and several have gone on to play professional sports in the WNBA and NFL.

The Juneteenth Charity Barbecue Cookoff Competition and Music Festival will be held at the San Marcos Plaza Park from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, June 14, and from 11-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. The Johnnie Armstead Parade through downtown San Marcos will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. Local churches will hold events throughout the whole month.
