KZSM–Serving this community on Sunday, and yes, everyday

Sunday, August 27, 2023

Sunday is traditionally a day of rest, reflection, and possibly recreation, but for many of us it’s the time to prepare for the busy week ahead. Here at KZSM, our live Sunday shows support and celebrate our community and our listeners with information, entertainment, and above all a chance to be heard.

11 a.m. brings “Veterans Hour,” hosted by “Diesel” Dee Bartlett and “Steady” Steve Jones and dedicated to “those who serve and those who serve those who serve.” Veterans Hour focuses on the needs and opportunities for veterans and military families within the San Marcos area. Topics include access and changes to veteran benefits, upcoming and recent state and local legislation and policies affecting veterans, events and activities that promote health and wellness within the military community, and more.

Typically, Dee finds and interviews guests and Steve produces the show, but the two hosts also “pontificate and navigate,” sometimes taking a light-hearted look at serious topics. On today’s show, Dee will interview “military brat” Linda Ewing, author of Growing Up Military, discussing some of the memories she experienced as a child of an active duty Air Force father. She will also provide information about local veterans’ events.

From 5-7 p.m., you can keep up with the local music scene with “Revolving Door,” a live open mic show hosted by Rob Roark. “It may be a young high schooler for the first time on the radio. Or a four-piece rock band unplugged,” Rob explains. Local busker James Taylor is a regular. This week, Jed Craddock returns to the studio to promote his show on Friday, September first at The Porch.

Following “Revolving Door,” from 7-8 p.m., “Raices” features stories and histories from San Marcos’ Hispanic community. “Raices” translates as “roots,” and host Cathy Lara interviews guests in both English and Spanish to trace the roots of our changing community.

“If we look back at the Hispanic people in this town fifty, sixty, or seventy years ago, there wasn’t much written history,” Cathy explains. “Often they had to work in the fields and didn’t get a formal education so everything was passed down orally.” “Raices” captures and records that history before it is lost to time.

Prepare for your week by learning about community resources and listening to your neighbors. And if you have music or a story you’d like to share, e-mail KZSMSan-Marcos@gmail.com.
