KZSM–You never know whose voice you may hear

Sunday, May 7, 2023

Many of the original shows on KZSM.org, your true community radio station, welcome guests, either into our storefront studio or by phone.

Since our beginnings in 2017, we’ve welcomed politicians, writers, businesspeople, educators, scientists, activists, and your neighbors.

Musicians of all kinds have performed live and reflected on the ups and downs of their creative journeys. All of these guests have made memories for our program hosts and, we hope, for you, our listeners.

Samantha Strahan of “The Porch Radio Hour” (Wednesdays 7-9 p.m.) says that her first guest, Alex Schultz of Rock Bottom String Band, helped her ease into her new role.

“We both came in blindly, uncertain of how the show or interview would go. His patience and trust in me to figure it out made the show go smoothly and we could have talked for hours about all the music we love. It set my show off on the best foot possible, and I thought ‘this is fun–I can get used to this!’” For Blake Farrar, host of “Texas River Tonk” (Fridays noon-2 p.m.), a surprise guest marked a special anniversary. The show celebrated its 69th episode on Friday, April 21, with South Texas Tweek and Christopher Seymore.

“In the middle of the interview, John Mutchler of the Golden Roses surprisingly stopped by to join the show, just minutes after his brand-new single was played on the air.”

Farrar continues, “You never know who is going to make an appearance on ‘Texas River Tonk,’ but you can be sure it’ll be a good time.”

For Mateo Garcia, host of “Science Stories” (Fridays 3-4 p.m.), every guest had a special impact. “Picking a favorite ‘Science Stories’ guest is like asking a bibliophile to pick a favorite book, or a foodie to pick a favorite dish,” he explains, “It's nearly impossible!”

But he admits that Dr. Mitch Pryor, co-founder of the Nuclear & Applied Robotics Group, an industry affiliate program supporting automation in the energy sector, is a favorite: “Who doesn’t love robots?”

Garcia anticipates another memorable guest May 19–Dr. Hal Alper, the scientist who developed an enzyme that can degrade plastic in 24 hours.

Tune in for the inside story on a discovery that may have a huge impact on our planet.

And keep listening to KZSM.org to hear ideas, opinions, and music that will engage, enlighten, and entertain you.
