KZSM—News & (Almost) All Kinds of Music

Sunday, June 21, 2020

KZSM.org continues to broadcast live news specials at noon on Mondays and Fridays. We are covering the increase of COVID-19 cases in Hays County and the nation, along with local protests and concerns about policing. Friday we spoke with Sandra Pantlik, Texas State Assistant Vice President for University Advancement. This week, we expect to talk with regular callers San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson and County Judge Ruben Becerra this week.

In addition to news, KZSM.org offers an eclectic variety of music, often played live in the studio by DJs with a passion for their kind of music.

Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. Dave Wendel hosts “The Handsomest Boy on the Radio,” a jazz show consisting of great American music spanning the 1920s to the present. Wendel plays everything from Louis Armstrong to the Mahavishnu Orchestra. “I also have a serious love for Latin form of jazz,” he reports, “especially music from Cuba and the sounds of Brazil.” Wendel prides himself on the purity and authenticity of the jazz he plays. “This is not a smooth jazz show” he says. “This show is for Hep Cats only. No squares allowed.”

After Wendel’s jazz show, from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday, you can dance your way through “Downtown Funk,” with “Sammy the Bull” Falletta. His show celebrates his Louisiana roots with a genre of music that began in the sixties and proliferated into “Jazz Funk,” “R & B Funk,” and even “Funk Rock.” All of it, as Falletta describes it, “pure, unadulterated, groovelicious.”

Another KZSM.org DJ celebrating her roots through her music is Jeanne Randall, AKA “Limey’s Lass.” Her show, “Celtic Corner,” airs Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. She plays a range of Celtic music, from lively reels to heart rending ballads, and indulges her love of bagpipes at least once on every show.

Other KZSM music shows feature heavy metal, gospel music, and local bands both live and recorded. But there’s definitely room for more. If you have a passion for your own kind of music, you can join these and our other DJs to share that passion with our listeners. We would especially like to add country, blue grass, and classical to our eclectic variety of music. E-mail kzsmsanmarcos@gmail.com.

Volunteers sustain our programming, but space and equipment cost money, and KZSM.org is a self-supporting non-profit. To help sustain our programming, find the “donate” button on our website, KZSM.org. Tune in, stay in, help out.
