KZSM — Always a source of support

Sunday, March 21, 2021

At KZSM.org, caring for our community forms the essence of our mission to educate, engage, enlighten, and entertain. Our broadcasts provide a whole range of information and opportunities to make life just a little easier for our listeners.

For the first months of the pandemic, we offered daily and then twice-weekly noon news hours, including the latest COVID-19 statistics and interviews with experts and officials such as San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, County Judge Ruben Becerra, and Dr. Lee Johansson, Chief Medical Officer at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa San Marcos. We also talked to business owners, teachers, clergy, and activists to create a complete picture of the community’s response to the crisis.

Sundays 11 a.m. to noon, “The Veterans Hour” provides resources for “those who serve, and those who serve those who serve." Hosts Dee Bartlett and Steve Jones research various groups to find out what they do, how they help, and what kind of reputation they have. “We help veterans and their families navigate those waters.”

One of our newest shows, “Real Estate 101” (Sundays 8-9 p.m.) offers practical advice for prospective home buyers. Host Salana Henderson wants “to show people that if you can afford to rent in this city, you can afford to buy.” She and her guests share advice on everything from negotiating a mortgage to designing your space and even adopting a pet.

For a different kind of support, listeners can tune in to “Sunrise Soul Food,” hosted by Carole Coburn, which airs Sunday mornings from 6-8 a.m. and repeats from 8-10 for later risers. “Sunrise Soul Food” is designed to share the beauty of the sunrise with friends, prayer, and Christian music.

Listeners with a different perspective will find support on Monday 11 a.m.-noon with “Freethought Radio,” a national broadcast sponsored locally by the Hill Country Freethinkers. The show offers programming for nonreligious listeners, featuring music and interviews with authors and activists.

If self-expression sustains you, tune in Fridays from 6-7 p.m. to hear “Creator’s Corner” (first and second Fridays), sponsored by the San Marcos Art League, or “Martian Message,” (third and fourth Fridays) presented by Studio San Martian. Both shows explore the sources of creativity and inspiration.

To learn about sources of help and upcoming events in San Marcos and the area, listen to KZSM.org all day, every day, and our regular Public Service Announcements will keep you informed.
