KZSM — Get involved by underwriting a show

Sunday, June 13, 2021

KZSM.org is a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We rely on grants, fundraisers, and donations to stream the voice of our community locally and world-wide—all day, every day. Like everyone else, we have taken an economic hit from the pandemic, so we are especially grateful for the organizations and businesses who help fund us by underwriting our programs.

For a modest $50 monthly donation, organizations, businesses, or individuals can underwrite an hour of programming. Many of our current underwriters support programming that reflects their missions and interests. For instance, the Haute Spot Event Venue in Cedar Park underwrites “Friday Night with Care” (Fridays 8-10 p.m.), and host Carole Coburn features music and interviews with performers that play the venue.

The Hill Country Freethinkers support “Freethought Radio” (Mondays 11 a.m. to noon), a nationally syndicated show that offers programming for nonreligious listeners. The Freethought Radio broadcasts carry on the traditions of the Freethinkers, protecting the constitutional principle of the separation of church and state.

The San Marcos Art League furthers their mission “to encourage, foster, promote, and nurture the arts in the San Marcos community” by underwriting “Creator’s Corner” (6-7 p.m., first and second

Fridays each month), a program that showcases local artists and musicians, with interviews and news of our thriving arts scene.

“Bookmarked” (Tuesdays 4-6 p.m.) is underwritten by the Wittliff Collections, housed on the top floor of the Albert B. Alkek library at Texas State University. Founded by the late Austin screenwriter and photographer Bill Wittliff and his wife, Sally, the archive collects, preserves, and shares the artistic process that springs from the Southwestern imagination.

Because “Bookmarked” features discussions of books and interviews with authors, the partnership between the show and the archive goes beyond generous financial support. Thanks to Literary Curator Steve Davis, some of the distinguished authors who have donated their papers and memorabilia to the Collections have been my guests on “Bookmarked.” Fiction writers Paulette Jiles, Elizabeth Crook, and Sergio Troncoso, poet Naomi Shihab Nye, and playwright Celeste Bedford Walker have talked with me about their work.

Not every underwriter has a special connection with a particular broadcast. Down to Earth Barbecue Sauce of Lockhart underwrites “The Veterans Hour” (Sundays 11 a.m. to noon), just because they like the show.

Whatever your reason, if you, your business, or your organization would like to support one of our shows, contact kzsmsanmarcos@gmail.com.
