KZSM — Introducing the Weekly Show
KZSM.org offers a rich variety of music programming. Whether or not they focus on a particular genre, each of our broadcasts bears the unique stamp of the host’s imagination. Our newest offering, “The Weekly Show” (Wednesdays 10-11 p.m.), is no exception. Host Mason Moore gives listeners a glimpse of “what happened in music history this week,” with an emphasis on local performers but including “anything that happened back to fifty years ago.”
For example, the week before Moore’s first show January 25 saw the debut of “Meet the Beatles!,” Don McLean’s “American Pie,” and Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay,” among other hits, all included in the playlist.
To create that playlist, Moore does some internet research but will often “just go through music I like to see when it came out.” “The music comes from all genres — no restrictions,” he continues, including “old-time music, current rock, indie, Spanish music, or little bit of hip-hop. If it sounds good, I’ll play it!”
Besides good music, “The Weekly Show” will provide a glimpse of what was happening in the world when the songs were recorded, with a bit of background about current events such as elections. Music reflects the issues and concerns circulating as it is created. For example, the Vietnam War and the protests against it inspired a whole range of songs, from “Ballad of the Green Berets” to “Alice’s Restaurant.”
Moore hosted “The Local Show” on KTSW for three years. After his recent graduation, he expanded his love of radio, reaching out to become immersed in the community by volunteering for KZSM. Since KZSM already offers local music on “Revolving Door,” “Metal Mark Live,” “Texas River Tonk,” and now “Live From the Porch,” he developed the idea of “The Weekly Show.” The format perfectly suits his wide-ranging appreciation of all kinds of music. “I’ll always have a fresh show, he explains, “every week something different.”
Moore will be joined in the studio by his canine co-host Franklin, a schnauzer rescue who shares his taste in music. Listeners are invited to come by the studio during “The Weekly Show” to say hello to Moore and pet Franklin, who loves company.
