KZSM — Listen for the music you love

Sunday, September 27, 2020

The music we play at KZSM.org is as diverse and original as the community we serve. Ten of our regular shows feature music only; ten more combine talk and music, including talk about music. We also maintain an extensive library of Texas music, including many selections by local performers.

Dave Wendel, the unofficial curator of our KZSM.org music library, hosts “Rock Your Face” on Thursdays from 8-10 p.m. The show features rock ‘n’ roll from the 1950s to the present. Wendel’s shows, he explains, “are not ‘oldies’ or ‘classic rock’ formats. I do not play greatest hits packages. I do my best to play music that the average listener may not be familiar with and to keep it accessible.” Wendel also does themed shows, such as “two hours of Afro Beat” and shows featuring an artist and their music played by others. “I try to make these show as diverse as possible from week to week,” Wendel says. “I might play BB King, John Lee Hooker and Paul Butterfield one week, and the next week you might hear Tangerine Dream, Yes and King Crimson.”

Some DJs like Wendel range widely; other dive deeply into a tradition. On “Celtic Corner” (Saturdays noon-2 p.m.), Jeanne Randall, “Limey’s Lass,” plays Irish, Scottish, and related music, and indulges her love of bagpipes at least once on every show. She is currently planning a Ceilidh (pronounced "kay lee") special. “A Ceilidh,” she explains, “is a social gathering—from something as small as house party all the way to a ballroom setting. I’ll play two hours of dance music, so put on the ghillies (dancing shoes) and let’s party.” As she does every year, Randall feature another special on Burns night, at the end of January. “I share some of the history and menus of a typical Burns night celebration and the poems that he wrote that have been set to music.”

Other KZSM music shows feature heavy metal, gospel music, and funk. But we have plenty of room for more. If you have a passion for your own kind of music, we will train you to join Wendel, Randall, and our other DJs with a show of your own. We would especially like to add country, blue grass, and classical to our eclectic variety of music. To apply, E-mail kzsmsanmarcos@gmail.com.
