KZSM — More music events this week

Saturday, November 12, 2022

Save some dates later this week, when you’ll have multiple opportunities to experience the diverse sounds of KZSM.org in multiple venues in and around San Marcos.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, 7-9 p.m., you can enjoy our free Kissing Alley concert, in the historic alley across from the courthouse. The evening features country music, with the local band Foster & Quinn and singer/songwriter Sam Downing. The group began in 2020 with lead singers Ben Foster and Clinton Quinn and then expanded to include lead guitarist Shea Klepfer and drummer Blake Koningsor. “We’ve all known each other through school and work,” band members recall, “but once we began playing with each other our chemistry and understanding of our skills and insights flowed into our music.” They draw inspiration from fellow artists such as Tyler Childers, George Strait, Robert Earl Keen, and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Sam Downing will open for Foster and Quinn to round out an evening of country. Kissing Alley Concerts are sponsored partly by a grant from the San Marcos Arts Commission.

Beginning that same night, veteran DJ Metal Mark hosts the Triple Threat Metalfest. Mark and his “Metal Mark Live” show (Thursdays 10 p.m. to midnight) are a driving force in the local metal scene. San Martian musicians recognize Mark on the street from his show and his Facebook page.

Eighteen different bands will perform at three different venues: At Jack’s Road House on Thursday, Ledezma Lethal Legends from San Antonio will head the line-up. On Friday, Nov. 18, the Gray Horse Saloon will host Bat Allison and five other groups. Saturday, Nov. 19, the Triple Threat will move to Ragnar’s on the Compound, featuring Trejo, a band that’s played live on the sidewalk outside the studio during Metal Mark’s show. Triple Threat shows run from 6 p.m. to midnight; admission is $5 for one night or $10 for all three. All proceeds will benefit KZSM, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supported entirely by donations, underwriting, and the occasional grant.

The entertainment at our events is as diverse as our programming—whether you like country, Metal, or smooth sounds and comedy, you’ll find something to enjoy. Check out our KZSM Facebook page and this column for more details about these upcoming events. Come out, meet our volunteers, learn more about us, and support your True Community Radio station—just south of weird.
