KZSM — Radio brings a dream to life

Sunday, September 13, 2020

At KZSM, our broadcasts are driven by the host’s personal passion. For Jeremiah Wilkerson, host of “Shattered Glass Radio” (Thursdays 5-7 p.m.), that passion is professional wrestling.

In preparing for the debut of KZSM.org in 2017, Wilkerson imagined taking his stand-up comedy act to radio. But friend and fellow comic Kelly Stone, knowing his life-long love of the sport, suggested a wrestling show. “And I told her, ‘nah, that’ll never work.’” But it did, partly because of Wilkerson’s local focus. “I talk about the local indie scene as much as possible. I try to stay away from WWE and the bigger promotions. There’s a thousand wrestling podcasts and they all talk about the same thing and beat the same dead horse.”

Through a mutual friend, Wilkerson met former San Martian Melissa Cervantes, the wrestler Thunder Rosa. Knowing that she and her husband Brian had promoted Sabotage Wrestling in Austin, he told them about his desire to be part of professional wrestling. They gave him flyers to distribute; he handed them out and came back for more. Eventually he became like family to them, providing a support system for Thunder Rosa’s burgeoning career.

On road trips, they talked repeatedly about another promotion. “I knew how much fun it could be, Wilkerson recalls, “and I always wanted to be in pro wrestling to begin with. I figured this was my avenue to get in—I always wanted to be more than just ‘the Thunder Rosa guy.’” Finally she said “Let’s start it, so you’ll shut up!” And Mission Pro Wrestling was born.

Wilkerson found the perfect home for the new promotion in Pinballz Kingdom in Buda. “Hell Hath No Fury,” an all-women night of wrestling, will debut this Friday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. With Mission Pro Wrestling, all-women includes promoters and producers as well as performers. “Me and Brian are like silent partners,” Wilkerson reports. In the main event, Thunder Rosa will defend her NWA World Women’s championship title against Lindsay Snow.

The promoters are taking every COVID-19 precaution—requiring masks, distancing patrons, taking temperatures, etc. Tickets may no longer be available due to limited capacity, but the matches will be streamed live on titlematchwrestlingnetwork.com.

For Jeremiah Wilkerson, hosting a radio broadcast brought a dream to reality. Working with radio could create real magic for you as well. To learn more, contact KZSMSanMarcos@ gmail.com.
