KZSM — Statistics and solace for today
Every weekday at noon since the emergency declaration on March 15, KZSM.org has broadcast our COVID-19 emergency news special, with the latest local, national, and international statistics on the pandemic. Beyond the numbers, we’ve explored the human impact of the crisis by talking to people. During this past week, we’ve interviewed San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson and Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra about the city and county’s response to Gov. Greg Abbott’s order permitting the reopening of some businesses.
The news we report is often disturbing, but we also express encouragement and hope for the future. Also last week, Mark Jalufka, general manager of Lions Club Tube Rentals, detailed his plans for a safe and responsible reopening in the future.
The programming we offer during the rest of the day and night offers both entertainment and food for thought. Two of our newest shows, HaiTarot and Sunrise Soul Food, take different paths to the reach the spiritual solace so needed at this time.
HaiTarot, hosted by Attika Bastian, airs Saturday mornings 8-9 a.m. One of the main purposes of the show is to help listeners develop an awareness of their intuition and how it works.” Tarot is my vehicle,” Bastian explains. “I will teach listeners how to use it to clarify the crossroads of life and deepen daily experiences so that life is enriched.” She stresses that “it is important to allow time to be uninhibited and spontaneous in spiritual development.”
Sunrise Soul Food, hosted by Carole Coburn, airs Sunday mornings from 6-8 a.m. and repeats from 8-10 a.m. for later risers. The first hour includes a special segment with Stella Burkhalter, Pastor of Kyle United Methodist church. The second hour features a short bible study — "a deeper dive into the word of God” called “Messes and Masterpieces” with theologist Stephanie Polenz of Colorado. As host Coburn describes it, “Sunrise Soul Food is designed to share the beauty of the sunrise with friends, prayer, and Christian music. A way to start your day off on the right foot. Or your left — no politics here, only good music, good news and good friends.”
