Marquez intends to run for Council Place 5

Sunday, August 12, 2018

Jocabed G. Marquez, PhD has declared her intention to run for San Marcos City Council’s Place 5.

Marquez  teaches first-year students to navigate college successfully at Texas State University, where she also serves as a research analyst and grant specialist. Her doctoral degree is in school improvement; she collaborated with MD Anderson Cancer Center in pursuit of her master’s degree: research on in-vitro, anti-cancer activity via the synthesis of beta-lactams.

Marquez, 35, lives in the Blanco Vista neighborhood and has been actively involved with the Hispanic Policy Network on campus,  the youth program at her church Roca Eterna, Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, Mano Amiga, and Calaboose African American History Museum.

In the Rio Grande Valley — where she grew up, she did graduate research and taught high-school science — she participated with her father’s church “Centro Berea” as well as Catholic Charities and the Equal Voice Network, a grassroots coalition of direct-service and social-change groups.

Her political philosophy is informed by theory, experience and spiritual principles. As a pastor’s daughter, Marquez firmly believes in embracing the tenets of her faith which are comprised of truth, justice, compassion and service to the community.

She believes in a type of servant leadership that is responsive to the community and advocates to improve conditions for the environment and the community as a whole:  “My role is to help build the social, economic and physical infrastructure for San Marcos to become an abundant community.”

Her platform includes: river and environmental stewardship; criminal justice reform; urging the University to do more to heal the “town and gown” rift; opposing welfare for developers; prioritizing election integrity; pursuing no kill status at the Animal Shelter; securing fair racial representation on council, including exploration of single-member districts;  championing fiscal responsibility; and investigating a host of potential partnerships that nurture and sustain positive change.
