Meet new San Marcos Women's Hall of Fame members

The city of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department and the members of the Women's Hall of Fame Committee recently announced the four leaders who are the 2023 inductees and newest members of the San Marcos Women's Hall of Fame.

Named to join an elite list of women who have dedicated much of their lives to this community are Bobbie Garza-Hernandez, Nancy Hanks Ellis, Mittie Miller and Mary Peterson Earls.

Mayor Jane Hughson and the members of the City Council initially honored the four women on Monday, Oct. 2, with a proclamation, highlighting their individual achievements with respect to their volunteerism and leadership, touching specifically on these qualities that led their family, friends and citizens to nominate them for this honor.

These outstanding women were nominated by family, friends and community members for their volunteerism and leadership in the community.

Today at 6 p.m. at the Pauline Espinosa Community Hall, a ceremony will formally honor these women in front of the community that chose them to become part of an elite group of in excess of 140 women. The San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame began in 1984.

According to city information, criteria for selection includes volunteerism in multiple areas of service, meeting the needs of the community, demonstration of initiative, influencing positive change and going beyond the call of duty.

The future inductee must be a San Marcos resident.

Nominations are generally accepted online annually beginning in late June, July and August. Paper nominations were also available at the Parks and Recreation office, 401 E. Hopkins Street.
