Mermaid Society has book program

San Marcos CISD schools will soon benefit from Mermaid Society SMTX’s Eco-Guardianship Book Program.

Mermaid Society SMTX, a local nonprofit organization which aims to inspire community connection for stewardship of the San Marcos River, will expand its book program into all seven SMCISD elementary schools and Bonham Pre-Kindergarten School.

SMCISD and Mermaid Society SMTX will celebrate this new opportunity for students at each elementary school.

The official launch will be held at Mendez Elementary School, 1805 Peter Garza Dr., on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 8:30 a.m. with a symbolic ribbon-cutting and mermaid- themed reception for area officials.

Mermaid Society SMTX’s book program is a unique book-gifting initiative with a mission to nurture the next generation of Eco-Guardians who will champion the protection and preservation of earth.

The program began at three local libraries–San Marcos Public Library, Wimberley Village Library, and Martindale Community Library– where Mermaid Society SMTX stocked them with an assortment of hand-selected books, ranging from eco-conscious reads and enchanting mermaid tales.

Mermaid Society SMTX invites the public to contribute to the new initiative by selecting from a thoughtfully curated collection of eco-conscious books and mermaid tales that’ll spark the imagination of children, nurturing the growth of this literary program.

Selected books, approved by school leadership, will find a permanent home within SMCISD school libraries.

San Marcos is the Mermaid Capital of Texas after an effort championed by Mermaid Society SMTX, the City of San Marcos, Texas Sen. Judith Zaffirini, and State Rep. Erin Zwiener was approved by the 87th Texas Legislature in 2021.

The 7th Annual Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m., whenseveral of the SMCISD elementary schools will take part in this uniquely San Marcos event.
