Mermaid Society SMTX's Mermaid Promenade and Downtown Street Faire set for Sept. 25

Sunday, September 12, 2021

Put those fins to the pavement and join Mermaid Society SMTX for the Mermaid Promenade and Downtown Street Faire, as part of the Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest.

The Mermaid Promenade and Downtown Street Faire takes place on Sept. 25 in downtown San Marcos. The promenade begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. The Downtown Street Faire immediately follows the parade and continues through 8 p.m.

The event is designed to highlight the unique San Marcos River, artistic culture and to celebrate San Marcos’ vibrant creative and river community. The parade route begins and ends on S. C.M. Allen Parkway and passes the Hays County Historic Courthouse on N. LBJ Dr. The promenade will feature floats, marchers, dancers and music.

“This all-inclusive city parade celebrates our history of the Aquamaids of Aquarena Springs and immortalizes the mermaid as guardians of the San Mar cos River,” Mermaid Society SMTX said.

The Downtown Street Faire will feature live music, artisan booths, dance performances and food. Featured live music performances include Henry Invisible, Bida Bida Banda, Trouble in the Streets, Oscar Ornelas and Time of Night. Vendors will be spaced out on the courthouse lawn and surrounding streets.

Mermaid Society SMTX asks that attendees spread out along the parade route to create safe distancing and wear a mask if they are unable to maintain proper distancing. Masks will be available and a vaccination site will be open to the public and set up inside the Historic Hays County Courthouse.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we ask you to please do your part in helping to protect yourself, your family, and the countless others who will be attending the parade. Please remember to wear your mask,” Mermaid Society SMTX said in a Facebook post.

The title sponsor of the 2021 Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest is H-E-B, presenting sponsor of the Mermaid Promenade is the San Marcos Lions Club and the presenting sponsor of the Downtown Street Faire is La Cima San Marcos.
