NFL Combine with a San Marcos twist

Sunday, April 16, 2023

Members of San Marcos CISD’s Aspiring Assistant Principal Institute particiated in the inaugural Aspiring AP Combine on Wednesday, April 12.

The event, inspired by the NFL Combine, had future leaders take part in five different stations.

Each portion allowed participants an opportunity to display their instructional leadership talents they have acquired in their professional careers and while attending the monthly seminars hosted by San Marcos CISD’s Leadership Academy.

Each aspiring assistant principal rotated from station-to-station throughout the event.

At the leadership story station, aspiring APs were given 10 minutes to deliver their leadership story.

Combine participants took part in an interview station, where they went through a mock interview.

At the in-basket station, aspiring APs were given a packet of various communications received on their “first day” as an assistant principal.

Combine participants were asked to write their responses to each communication received and rank them by priority.

Aspiring APs were SMCISDasked to analyze an instructional lesson video and provide feedback during the Instructional Feedback station. The combine also included a data analysis and action plan station, where future leaders evaluated data and were asked to present their findings and recommendations.

Each aspiring assistant principal will be given feedback from the SMCISD Office of Academics the week following the combine. The Aspiring Assistant Principal Institute has taken place throughout the 2022-23 academic year, representing the first cohort within the San Marcos CISD Leadership Academy. Leadership development is a priority at San Marcos CISD.

This year, the SMCISD Office of Academics team chose to focus on educators interested in becoming assistant principals.

There are currently 11 educators enrolled in the Aspiring Assistant Principal Institute.

San Marcos educators enrolled in the institute learn about SMCISD systems related to each lever of the effective schools framework; explore strategies to enhance their leadership skills related to SMCISD’s Leadership Definition; and engage in hands-on experience that will help them be better prepared to pursue an assistant principal job.
