P&Z to decide on workforce housing recommendation

Tuesday, September 24, 2019

After 15 meetings and working groups and two open house events, along with participation from 749 citizens, San Marcos’ Workforce Housing Task Force has a final Strategic Housing Action Plan.

On Tuesday, the Planning and Zoning Commission will consider a recommendation on the proposed plan, which will then be considered by the San Marcos City Council. The task force was formed to create a plan that will address housing needs in San Marcos, as workforce housing is one of council’s five Strategic Initiatives in 2018 and 2019.

According to the draft housing plan, the city  commissioned Root Policy Research to conduct an assessment of housing needs in San Marcos in 2018-2019.

“This included a demographic and housing market analysis, as well as a detailed community survey which was completed by 2,000 respondents,” states the draft plan. “The results of the San Marcos Housing Needs Assessment were then used as a basis for substantial public outreach to better understand the housing challenges in San Marcos.”

For the course of 14 months, the task force met to develop the plan, which includes four goals, six strategies and 23 actions that will address San Marcos’ housing needs.

The plan’s four primary goals are as follows: expand opportunities for housing, preserve and enhance existing housing stock, leverage community and regional partners and quantity and meet the housing need of current and future residents.

Before P&Z makes a recommendation, the public will have the opportunity to speak about the plan during a public hearing.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. at 630 E. Hopkins St.
